The turnout for the joint 2013 swim team reunion was excellent, but attendance was down. However it was another resounding success.
Approximately 12 ex-swimmers and their families attended the reunion.
Below is a rogue's gallery of ex-swimmers who attended.Click here to enlarge the photograph
Meet and Greet at the Hideaway: 3pm - 5pm
It was so good to see old friends again and as usual the 2 hours passed all too quickly.
Then it was off for the group picture in front of Old Central.
Even though it is a few minutes walk to Old Central, it took time getting everybody there. I heard somebody say "where is Old Central?" and we were standing right next to it. I hate to think how long it will take when we are all in wheelchairs.
Group Photo in front of Old Central: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Once there Ken Helt took group photographs (see picture at top of the page) again of the "usual suspects" - phrase from the film Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart.
As you can see we are a fine bunch....another year has passed, but nothing had changed. You can see we all have been on stringent workout regimes (in the pool twice a day) and our physiques are a testament to that fact.
As we waited for the pictures to be taken we discussed plans for our participation in the Rio Olympics. Somebody asked if there were openings in Rio for helpers to hand out baskets like they do at Walmart. We all agreed that if there was we were going.....most of us have a job at Walmart handing out baskets already, so no training would be required for this discipline.
Hot Links at the Elk's Club: 8pm - 12 midnight
This year's Hot Link's rehearsal gig was held at the Elk's club.
The Elk's Club is unique in that it doesn't have any windows. This is because it was used during prohibition by Elk's members to play poker and drink alcohol, and because it didn't have windows nobody could see what was going on inside.
Now the Links haven't played for some time, so it was thought this would be an excellent venue for them to play and fine tune their instruments and voices. It was also felt that the police wouldn't be called either when the Links murdered songs.
The Links' were given free beer throughout the evening, but the rest of us had to pay for our drinks. As the alcohol went down I swear the Links started to play in tune and Bill actually hit the correct notes. But then that might have been the effects of the beer who knows!
Swimmers and their families all turned up and the music was awesome. One groupie came all the way from Vinita, Oklahoma.
Below is a picture of the four original members of the Hot Link's band. Woody, the drummer (back row and on the left), is the one who is now incontinent and has trouble with yellow water surrounding him when he swims (see next section for details). The years have not been kind.....
The band played all types of music and people were dancing and singing along with them. The night was a great success. Well done to the Hot Links.
Swimming Relays: 10am - 12noon
Again, this year we met at the pool around 10am.
We had enough swimmers for 3 teams. There were a couple of spare swimmers who swapped in and out with other swimmers during the fun relays.
We swam various relays and only had to use the defibrillator twice. I swear John Meyer faked a heart attack twice just so that we could shock him. Somebody pointed out it wasn't smart to use the defibrillator in the water. Heck, what did they know! We did anyway.
We had asked attendees to bring their Speedos, but a couple of attendees considered themselves to be fashion icons i.e. Tom Grula and Robert Casselman.
Grula shouts "Surf's up!" and dives in.
Robert Casselman is thinking "Where's the surf? Grula lied!".
Again, Woody kept getting out of the pool to go to the restroom. He said his incontinence was bothering him.
After the relay races we found a waterpolo ball and off to the spring boards we went.
Some background here: Back in the 70s after workout we would play with the polo ball on the springboards. The idea was to throw the ball to people as they jumped off the 3 mtr springboard, that person would try to catch it and throw it to another person jumping off of the other 3 mtr springboard who would try to catch it and throw it to another person jumping off of the 1 mtr springboard and so on.
The record back in those days was 8 catches before the ball was dropped.
Yet again, we didn't manage any catches this year. One participant, who will remain nameless, lost his swim suit when he hit the water. The poor boy showed his shortcomings on that one.
After the relays and fun on the springboards, we dried off, got dressed and headed off to Buffalo Wild Wings.
Buffalo Wild Wings 3pm
We met up at Buffalo Wild Wings to eat wings and watch football. OSU wasn't playing this weekend, so we watched the OU vs Texas game. Guess who we cheered for?
The food was good and we reminisced about the old days.
We left Buffalo Wild Wings and headed off to Mexico Joes to hear and watch the Hot Links.
Hot Link live gig at Mexico Joe's: 8pm - 12midnight
The Hot Links played a live gig at Mexico Joe's and the place rocked.
Joe's was packed and the non-reunion people eating at Mexico Joes rocked along with us.
Just like last year the Links did us proud. Again the music lifted the rafters and the margaritas were going done hard and fast. What an evening!
The Hot Link's fame has grown over the past year and word is out. This can be seen by the number of groupies that turned up for the gig. (see picture below).
Those of us that turned up stayed until the end and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Breakfast: 10am at Camille's House
On Sunday Camille offered to host breakfast at her house.
The majority of attendees turned up and we had a Champagne breakfast.
It was Camille's birthday and we bought her a birthday cake. Unfortunately, Camille couldn't blow out the candles. She tried and tried, and then she realised they were trick ones. The old ones are the best.
Somebody asked Camille to show us her birthday suit, but she diplomatically refused. I think the exact words were "No way!".
After breakfast, we said our goodbyes and went on our own separate ways. Another year had gone, but it was agreed by all that we had had a great time.
2014 - Reunion Details.
The turn out this year although good, was low by previous standards. So it was questioned as to whether, or not we should have a reunion in 2014.
Bottom line is that maybe we have them too often. The reality is, everyone gets our e-mails, but the interest is just not there.
So the reunion committee will discuss whether, or not we will have a formal reunion in 2014. It maybe we just have an informal one. If you have a view on this please send us an email.
If you know of any ex-swimmers who haven't joined us yet, please send us their details and we will add them to the "Member's List".
