You are here: Home > 2014 Reunion Review
The turnout for the 2014 swim team reunion was small, but we had a great time .... around 15 attendees in total.
There were three new attendees and they said they would try to attend next year's gathering. Yea!!!
Meet and Greet at the Hideaway: 3pm - 5pm
We met for a couple of hours at the Hideaway where we ate pizza and drank beer.
It was so good to see old friends again and there were two new attendees ..... Kristen Anderson (Coach Cutter's daughter) and Anabel Woodmansee. It was so good to see them both.
The time as usual passed all too quickly and then it was off for the usual group picture.
The previous year it took so long to herd everybody across to Old Central and during the roundup we lost people in the process ...... we found Woody 2 hours later wandering the campus asking students where Old Central was located.
So we rounded everybody up and crossed the road in front of the Hideaway and took the picture in front of the OSU granite stone plaque instead of in front of Old Central. (The real reason we didn't walk over to Old Central was that it was raining).
Group Photo in front of OSU Granite plaque.
Contrary to populate belief chivalry is not dead and is still alive with the male swimmers ....... we put the girls at the back .... and Woody too. (see group picture below).
Another year has passed and New Year's resolutions to get trim and fit have all been long broken. Sadly the lbs still seem to be piling on.
As we waited for the pictures to be taken we discussed our Walmart jobs .... handing out baskets. To our surprise we found two more of the group were working at Walmart and somebody said he could do us a good deal on baskets if anybody wanted one. Somebody said he wanted one with wheels and not the kind with wheels that had a mind of their own.
It was getting dark by the time the group picture was taken. We had to go find Woody again. We found him over by the library muttering something about how Old Central had changed and why did it have books in it?
Below is a rogue's gallery of reunion attendees.

Hot Links Rehearsal at Bill Allen's Son's House: 7pm - 12 midnight
This year's Hot Link's rehearsal gig was held at Bill Allen's son's house. His son's name is Will.
Will kindly let us use his house for the Link's rehearsal gig. Finger snacks were provided and there was plenty of beer too.
The Links were in fine form. Prior to the reunion the Links had met up twice to practice. Once at Tommy Allen's House in Oklahoma City and the other at Tom Grula's house in Chicago. During their time at Tom Grula's house they had rented a recording studio and cut some of their own self written songs.
The Links comprised of Dave Biddick AKA "Big" - lead guitar, Ron "Woody" Woodburn AKA "The Nub" on drums, Tom Allen on Rhythm guitar AKA "Punk", Bill Allen AKA "Fat" lead singer, flute player, Sax player, announcer et al, Tom Grula AKA "Chicken Hut" on base and Tom Allen's son on base also.
The evening was a great success. The band played and rehearsed whilst the rest of us talked, ate and drank liquid refreshments, or as Bill Allen puts it - libations!
Below is a picture of the four original members of the Hot Link's band. A blast from the past!
Boards Dedication: 10am - 11noon
It has long been an irritant amongst ex-OSU swimmers that the OSU Athletic Department has air brushed the OSU swimming team from its history books.
So it was decided that we would put together a set of boards containing pictures of the OSU men's and ladies' swimming teams covering the time the swimming program was active .... the years covered were 1963 to 1979.
We approached the Colvin Center (in our day it was called the Hyper Center) Director and asked him if we put said boards together could we hang them in the Colvin Center. He said we could.
We set about creating the boards (6 in total) and commissioned Ken Helt (a local photographer) and his daughter (a graphic designer) to created the boards. We then asked for donations to cover the cost of the boards which came to $6K. Below is a picture of the Coach Cutter board.
Below is a photo of the OSU Swimming Boards. There are six of them in total, but one you cannot see which is to the right of the photo.
We received enough donations to cover the cost of the boards and a big thank you goes out to all those who donated. The fact that we managed to raise all the money shows to me what great respect we have for Coach Cutter, and also what great camaraderie exists between us.
The following people donated money and again a special thanks goes to them:
Robert Casselman, Rick Sievert, Camille (Frye) DeYong, Jeanne Devlin, Tom Grula, Dianna Watters, Ross Seymour, Missy (Lazenby) Mattey, Kristen (Cutter) Anderson, Anabelle Woodmansee, Dan Danner, Brendan Hayes, Wendell Smith, Pete Friesen, Kirby & Sharon Weldon, Dave Sonnenberg, Bob Farriss, Brad Dickey, Susan Parry Jacques, Jim Cutter, John Meyer, Sue (Sachau) Kruse, Tom Allen, Barbie (Edwards) Paige, Amy (Jobe) Nelson, Jerry Wilhm, Craig Shelton, Ron Woodburn.
I apologise if we have missed anybody off of the list.
The boards had already been hung in the Colvin Center prior to the reunion and special thanks goes to Camille for facilitating this and making it happen. Well done Camille.
We met in front of the boards for the dedication ceremony at 10am. Kristen (Cutter) Anderson (Coach Cutter's daughter) had kindly agreed to dedicate the boards. Kristen gave a wonderful speech and she did her father proud. She received a standing ovation (even though we were all standing anyway).
Just prior to the dedication ceremony we had a great surprise. Wendell Smith a member of the 1963 team joined us. It was so good to see him and we asked him to say a few words.
Wendell told us all about his swimming days. He has lost track of his peers, but we agreed that we will try to see if we can track any of them down and get them to come to the reunion.
In 1963 the team worked out in the old ROTC pool. It was small but adequate.
Wendell said he would try to attend next year's reunion.
Thanks goes to Wendell for telling us about his experiences when he swam at OSU.
We also asked Mary Frye to say a few words. Mary helped form and run the Ladies' OSU swimming teams.
Thanks goes to Mary for telling us about the swimming days of the OSU Ladies' teams.
At the end of the dedication we grouped together and took a group photo in front of the boards.
A splash in the pool: 11am - 12noon
After the dedication of the Boards most of the attendees stayed around the Boards area and talked about the Boards and old times.
However, four of the group did go for a splash in the pool.
Below is a picture of our four splash kids.
Somebody threw a 25c coin in the pool.
What Money? Where? Quick get the coin! Richard Baldwin got left behind in the rush......
Then it was off to the springboards to play catch ball.
After ten plus tries at catching the ball, the boys gave up and admitted defeat. It was fun to watch the antics of men who had never really grown up and were still kids at heart.
Bets were made on who would lose their trunks first.
Buffalo Wild Wings: 3:30pm - 5:00pm - 12noon
In the afternoon we all met up at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch OSU play Kansas on their sports TVs. OSU won 27-20. Go pokes!
Hot Link's Gig at Mexico Joes: 7pm - 11:30pm
The Hot Links played a live gig at Mexico Joe's and along with the usual Links songs they sang some of rhe songs they wrote over the summer.
The place was packed with Link's fans ...... namely us. And, the usual Link's groupies were there too.
Just like the previous years the Links did us proud. Again the music lifted the rafters and the margaritas were going done hard and fast. What an evening!
The place was packed with groupies throwing articles of clothing up on the stage and screaming "We love you Links".
Here are three of the groupies. You can see the excitement in their faces..... (see picture below).
Those of us that turned up stayed until the end and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Breakfast: 10am at Camille's House
On Sunday Camille hosted breakfast at her house again.
The majority of attendees turned up and after a hearty breakfast we ate birthday breakfast.
Just like last year, somebody asked Camille to show us her birthday suit, but she diplomatically refused. Same as last year, her exact words were "No way!".
After breakfast, we said our goodbyes and went on our own separate ways. Another year had gone, but it was agreed by all that we had had a great time.
2014 - Reunion Details.
The turn out this year although good, was still low, but it was agreed that we would hold another reunion in 2015.
If you know of any ex-swimmers who haven't joined us yet, please send us their details and we will add them to the "Member's List".
If you can, please make every effort to attend the 2015 reunion. The reunions are loads of fun, the Hot Links are always good value and Camille does a great breakfast. So come join us.
